FAQ

  • SUSTAINABILITY

Where is the wool sourced from?

We have vouched to source only New Zealand wool for our mats because of the high ethical standards of animal welfare in this country, as well as the guaranteed fibre specs that we can ensure through our supply agreements with the farmers. New Zealand farmers have led the way in on-farm research and education programs establishing best practices for animal health.

Where are Fifth Breath practice mats made?

The practice mats are manufactured in a world class felting facility, in Germany. Our supplier meets strict quality assurance standards and ensures that every one of the mats is made to specifications. While felting technology is available in other facilities around the world, the expertise and craftsmanship employed at our supplier’s facility offer our mats superior quality and durability.

How is your wool mat superior to the natural rubber mats?

Our mats have appropriate density for the same thickness, are odourless due to wool’s antibacterial properties, are 40% lighter than the same spec latex mats and have a pleasant constant temperature to the touch, throughout the practice. Our mats are also coated in key places for grip and they are biodegradable. Fire-resistant, if ever in need of a shield. When sweat comes on, our mats are moisture wicking and absorbing, so the natural grip kicks in. Because of that, there’s not break-in period necessary. Finally, our mats need no chemicals to cleanse them. Air them in the sun and they refresh, because sunlight is the most powerful disinfectant.
Warning: our mats are addictive due to the natural, tactile and earthy feeling acquired when stepping on them.

Isn’t it too hot to practice on wool?

Just like the wool on a sheep, your practice mat will keep you warm in the cold, and cool in the heat. This thermoregulation is a natural property of wool. Works especially well for intense practice and a long savasana just after – you feel nice and warm while your body is cooling down after asana practice.

What about when my practice mat gets wet from sweating during the practice?

Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in water, which is how it wicks sweat away from your mat so effectively. Once practice is completed, if wet, allow it to dry by leaving it flat for a while, preferably in a sunny area. That said, we don’t recommend to use our practice mat in hot studios, because humid and hot environment can shorten the shelf life of your new natural fibre practice mat.

    Does it slip?

This is not a sticky mat. The grippy surfaces provide relief, however this mat is one on which your core needs to be engaged. Mindful core engagement during the practice sets you on the right path towards corrects postures and helps to stabilize and support your spine.

What about durability? How long my mat will last?

Given the manufacturing quality, you can expect that it will last longer than any other natural fibre mat available. With weekly practice and proper storage and drying, we expect that it will be with you in 3-5 years. Otherwise, much longer. The mat has been moth treated.
However, nonwoven wool structures can serve many purposes that are naturally safe and sustainable. Check back on our website for creative suggestions to how to repurpose your practice mat once you are done with it.

What if I’m allergic to wool?

Wool is naturally non-allergenic. The sensation of skin irritation sometimes comes due to the difference in PH balance in wool and human skin. Our practice mats are made of wool naturally treated to neutralize PH in order to minimize this sensation too.

    How do I clean it?

The wool fibre is coated in its lanolin, which stops bacteria from attacking it. All you need to do to clean it is leave the mat flat out to dry after a sweaty practice, ideally under direct sunlight. If stained, spot dry cleaning is an effective solution.

    Why this colour choice?

We chose to not use dies in our mats. The texture comes from blending 90% white wool with 10% black wool.

I am vegan. Can I use your mat?

Depending on your reason for being vegan. Should it be due to being against animal cruelty, we can assure you that no animal has been harmed in producing the wool used in our mats. Sheep are treated humanely and ethically in New Zealand. And they need a haircut – even more than we do!

I am practicing Bikram / Hot yoga, would your practice mat work for me?

We don’t recommend to use our practice mat in hot studios, because humid and hot environment can shorten the shelf life of your new natural fibre practice mat.

    Is it itchy?

Only as much as your favorite wool jumper would be.
